Every few years a new parenting method promises to fix what is broken in our homes. Some focus on discipline, some on attachment, some on structure, some on freedom. Christian bookstores are full of titles offering five steps or seven habits or three secrets to raising great kids. Some of these books contain real wisdom. But the Bible does not give us a parenting formula. It gives us something better. It gives us a story, and it invites us to raise our children inside of it.Biblical theology asks a simple question: how does the whole of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, shape how we understand any given topic? When we ask that question about parenting, four truths rise to the surface. Children are image bearers. Children are sinners. Children are covenant members. And children are being raised for eternity, not just for adulthood. Let&#x27;s walk through each one.Children Are Image Bearers, Not Blank SlatesGenesis 1 tells us that God made humanity in his own image, male and female, and gave them the task of filling the earth and ruling over it as his representatives. That includes your children. Before they can walk or talk, before they show any particular gifting or personality, they already carry the image of God. Your child is not a lump of clay for you to shape into whatever you want. He or she is a person with dignity, purpose, and a soul made to know and love God.This changes how we see the goal of parenting. You are not engineering an outcome. You are stewarding a person who belongs to God before he or she belongs to you. Psalm 127 calls children a heritage from the Lord, a reward. They are gifts entrusted to you, not achievements you produce.Children Are Sinners, Not Just InnocentsAt the same time, Scripture is honest about something our culture often is not. Your children are sinners from the womb. Psalm 51:5 says as much, and Proverbs 22:15 says that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. This is not a popular thing to say about kids, but it is a merciful thing to say, because it tells you what kind of help your child actually needs.If your child&#x27;s core problem is simply a lack of information or a bad environment, better parenting techniques might solve it. But if the problem is a heart bent away from God, no technique will fix that. Only grace can. This is why gospel centered parenting looks different from moralistic parenting. Moralism says, behave and you will be loved. The gospel says, you are loved, now let that love change how you live. Our children need to hear both the law that shows them their need and the gospel that meets that need in Christ.Children Are Covenant Members, Not OutsidersHere is where our Reformed tradition offers something distinct and beautiful. In Genesis 17, God&#x27;s covenant promise to Abraham was not just for Abraham. It was for Abraham and his offspring after him. In Deuteronomy 6, the Shema is given to a whole household, not just to individual adults. In Acts 2:39, Peter tells the crowd at Pentecost that the promise is for them and for their children. In 1 Corinthians 7:14, Paul describes the children of even one believing parent as holy, set apart.This is why we baptize the children of believers in our tradition. Baptism does not guarantee salvation. Only faith in Christ does that. But baptism is a sign that God has placed his claim on this child, that this child is being raised inside the covenant community rather than standing outside it waiting to be let in someday. Practically, this means we do not raise our children as if they are unbelievers until proven otherwise. We raise them as members of the covenant, calling them to believe what is already true of the community they belong to.Parenting Is Discipleship, Not Just DisciplineEphesians 6:4 tells fathers not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Discipline is not the whole picture. It is paired with instruction, and both are anchored in the Lord, not in mere behavior management.Deuteronomy 6:6-7 gives us the pattern. The commands of God are first to be on our own hearts, and then taught to our children diligently, when we sit at home, when we walk on the road, when we lie down, and when we rise up. Discipleship is not a scheduled activity you fit into the week. It happens in the ordinary rhythm of life together, in the car, at the dinner table, during homework, in the middle of a meltdown. Your children are not primarily discipled by a curriculum. They are discipled by watching what you love and how you respond when life gets hard.The Goal Is a Worshipper, Not Just a Good KidIt is worth asking honestly what you actually want for your children. Many of us, if we are honest, want well behaved kids who make us look good, who succeed in school and sports, who avoid the mistakes we made. None of that is inherently wrong. But it falls far short of what Scripture calls us to.Psalm 78 tells us to teach the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, his might, and the wonders he has done, so that they would set their hope in God and not forget his works. The aim is not simply compliance. The aim is worship. A child who behaves well but has never been shown why Christ is worth loving has not really been discipled. He has only been trained.This is where gospel indicatives matter more than mere imperatives. Before we tell our children what to do, we need to tell them who God is and what he has already done for them in Christ. Obedience that flows from gratitude looks very different from obedience that flows from fear or performance, even when it looks identical from the outside for a season.You Are Not Doing This AloneOne last piece of biblical theology matters here. Parenting was never meant to be a private project carried out in isolation. Titus 2 pictures older believers investing in younger ones. The whole logic of covenant community assumes that your children are being raised not just by you, but by a church family who prays for them, teaches them, and models faith for them across generations.If you are a parent at Bethel, you are not meant to carry this alone. Bring your children into the life of the church. Let them see other adults who love Jesus. Let the songs, the sacraments, and the Sunday gathering shape their imagination alongside what happens at your kitchen table.Grace for the Parent TooIf this has made you feel the weight of your failures as a parent, you are in good company. Every parent in Scripture, from Abraham to David to the parents in the gospels who brought their children to Jesus, was flawed and limited. The good news of the gospel is not only for your children. It is for you.You will not parent perfectly. You will lose your patience, say the wrong thing, and wonder some nights if you are doing any of this right. But the same covenant faithfulness that holds your children also holds you. Christ is not waiting for you to become a better parent before he loves you. He already does. A Biblical Theology of Parenting

Most Christian parents believe they should be teaching their children about God at home. Far fewer actually do it with any regularity. That gap usually is not because parents do not care. It is because nobody ever showed them what it actually looks like, so it stays a vague good intention instead of a weekly habit.Deuteronomy 6:6-7 gives us the command. These words that I command you today shall be on your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. That is not written to pastors or Sunday school teachers. It is written to parents, in the home, in the ordinary moments of the day. Family worship is simply the practice of taking that command seriously and building a small, regular rhythm around it.What Family Worship Is, and Is NotFamily worship is not a miniature church service. You do not need a sermon, a bulletin, or any real preparation. It does not require you to be a theologian or a gifted public speaker. At its simplest, family worship is your household gathering for a few minutes to sing, read something from the Bible, talk about it briefly, and pray together. That is it.Many parents never start because they picture something far more elaborate than what is actually needed. Aim low at first. A five minute habit you actually keep will shape your children far more than an ambitious plan you abandon after two weeks.Why It Matters More Than It SeemsPsalm 78 tells us to tell the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, so that they would set their hope in God. Ephesians 6:4 calls fathers to bring up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Both verses assume the same thing, that the ordinary transmission of faith happens mainly at home, reinforced by the church, not the other way around.Your children are already being catechized every day, by screens, by school, by whatever fills the quiet moments of their week. The question is not whether they will be shaped. It is who gets to do the shaping. A short, consistent habit of Bible reading and prayer at home puts your voice, and God&#x27;s word, into that daily formation in a way that an hour on Sunday morning cannot do by itself.A Simple Rhythm You Can Actually KeepRead, talk, pray. That is the whole structure.Read a short passage of Scripture. A psalm, a gospel story, a chapter from a children&#x27;s Bible for younger kids. You do not need to read far. A few verses is enough for a real conversation.Talk about it briefly. Ask one or two simple questions. What did we learn about God here? What did this person do right or wrong? Is there anything in this passage that reminds you of something going on in our family this week? Resist the urge to turn it into a lecture. A short, honest conversation beats a long, one sided talk almost every time.Pray together. Thank God for something specific. Ask him for something specific. Let your children pray too, even if their prayers are short or a little scattered at first. Children learn to pray by praying, not by watching you pray perfectly.Adjusting for Different AgesWith toddlers and young children, keep it very short and very concrete. A simple Bible story, a short song, and a one sentence prayer is plenty. Do not expect them to sit still for long, and do not measure success by their behavior during those five minutes.With elementary age children, a children&#x27;s catechism works well alongside Bible reading. Short question and answer memorization gives them theological vocabulary they will draw on for the rest of their lives, even if they do not fully grasp every answer yet.With teenagers, family worship can shift toward real conversation. Read a passage together and let them ask hard questions. Do not panic if those questions are pointed or skeptical. A teenager who feels safe enough to voice doubt out loud at home is in a far better position than one who learns to hide itWhen You Miss Days, and You WillYou will not do this every single day. Life will interrupt it constantly, sports schedules, sickness, exhaustion, a season where everything falls apart. That is normal. The aim is not a perfect streak. The aim is a rhythm your family returns to again and again over many years.If you have never done this before, do not try to make up for lost time by starting with something elaborate. Start tonight, with one short passage and one short prayer. Build from there. Grace covers the days you miss just as much as it covers everything else in your parenting.A Habit That Outlasts YouThe words you read and the prayers you pray at your kitchen table will not feel significant most nights. There is usually no dramatic moment, just a short passage, a few questions, tired kids, a quick prayer before bed. But you are doing something with eternal weight in the middle of that ordinary routine. You are placing God&#x27;s word into your children&#x27;s memory before they are old enough to seek it out on their own, and trusting that the Spirit will use it long after they have left your table for one of their own.Pastor Thiago Silva

Family Worship: Making Deuteronomy 6 Practical

You can get a child to stop hitting his brother by taking away his tablet. You can get a child to say sorry by standing over her until the words come out. You can get a teenager to come home by curfew through threats alone. None of that is wrong exactly. But none of it touches what the Bible actually cares about most, which is the heart behind the behavior.Scripture is far more interested in the heart than in the outward act. Jesus said it plainly in Luke 6:45, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. In Mark 7, he traced sinful behavior back to what comes from within a person, not what comes at them from outside. If that is true of adults, it is true of our children too. A child who stops hitting his brother because he is afraid of punishment has learned some self control, and that is not nothing. But he has not necessarily learned why hitting is wrong or what should replace the anger underneath it.This is the difference between behavior modification and heart oriented parenting. One manages the outside. The other addresses the inside, trusting that changed hearts eventually produce changed behavior that actually lasts.Proverbs Is About Wisdom, Not Just RulesIt is easy to read Proverbs as a list of moral commands, do this, do not do that. But Proverbs is really a book about wisdom, about learning to see the world the way God sees it and to love what God loves. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts above everything else we guard, because all of life flows from there. The goal of raising wise children is not a list of behaviors checked off. It is a heart increasingly shaped by the fear of the Lord, which Proverbs calls the beginning of wisdom.This means that when your child disobeys, the most important question is rarely just what did you do. It is what did you want badly enough that you were willing to disobey to get it. That question gets underneath the behavior to the actual battle going on inside your child, a battle every one of us still fights as adults.Every Sin Is Rooted in a Misplaced LoveUnderneath most childhood disobedience is something a child wanted more than obedience in that moment. Attention. Control. Comfort. Being first. Avoiding pain or embarrassment. These are not exotic sins invented by children. They are the same idols that tempt adults, just smaller and less disguised.When you catch your child lying, the surface problem is the lie. The deeper problem is usually fear, of punishment, of disappointing you, of looking bad. When a child melts down over a toy, the surface problem is the outburst. The deeper problem is a heart that has, for a moment, decided that toy matters more than kindness or obedience. Naming that underlying want out loud, gently and without shaming your child, does something a chart or a sticker never will. It helps your child see themselves accurately, which is the first real step toward repentance rather than mere compliance.Questions That Get Past the SurfaceTry asking a few simple questions instead of only asking what happened. What were you hoping would happen? What did you believe in that moment that was not true? What would it have looked like to love your brother or sister right then instead of yourself? These questions take longer than a quick correction. They also do far more lasting work, because they train your child to examine their own heart rather than simply learning how to avoid getting caught next time.None of this means discipline disappears. Consequences still matter, and Scripture is clear that discipline itself, done rightly, is an act of love rather than something opposed to it. Proverbs and Hebrews both make that connection directly. But consequences paired with honest conversation about the heart accomplish something consequences alone cannot.Grace Driven Correction, Not Fear Driven ComplianceHere is where the gospel changes everything about how we discipline. If our only goal is well behaved kids, fear works fine in the short term. Threats produce compliance. But fear driven obedience tends to break down in the teenage years, once the threats no longer carry the same weight, or it produces adults who obey out of anxiety rather than love, always waiting for the other shoe to drop.Grace driven correction looks different. It sounds something like this. What you did was wrong, and there will be a consequence, and none of that changes how much you are loved. This mirrors how God deals with us. He disciplines those he loves, not to punish us into acceptance, but because we are already accepted in Christ. Hebrews 12 draws that connection directly. Our children need to feel that same order in our homes, correction that flows out of love already secured, not love that has to be earned back through good behavior.The Danger on Both SidesTwo extremes are worth naming. One is permissiveness, avoiding correction because we are afraid of conflict, or because we have confused grace with the absence of consequences. That is not love. Proverbs is blunt that failing to discipline a child is a failure to love them well.The other extreme is legalism, correcting behavior so relentlessly that a child never hears the gospel underneath the rules, only performance and disappointment. That tends to produce either rebellion or a brittle, fearful kind of obedience that eventually cracks. The biblical path runs between both, correction that is serious about sin and just as serious about grace.A Long, Slow WorkHeart level parenting is slower than behavior charts and star stickers. It requires a patience most of us do not have naturally, especially after a long day. But it is the kind of parenting that actually matches how God has always dealt with his people, patiently, over a lifetime, working from the inside out. You will not finish this work in a season, or even in eighteen years. You are planting seeds whose fruit you may not see for a long time. Parenting the Heart

The early years of parenting can feel like an emergency that never ends. Diapers, tantrums, sleepless nights, spilled cereal, a hundred small battles before breakfast is even over. It is easy in the middle of all that to lose sight of what these years are actually for. They are not primarily about producing good behavior. They are about laying a foundation, one your child will build the rest of their life on top of, whether they remember doing it or not.The Years of WonderYoung children are naturally attuned to wonder in a way most adults have lost. A bug on the sidewalk can stop a four year old in their tracks for ten minutes. A cardboard box becomes a spaceship. This is not a distraction from spiritual formation. Psalm 19 tells us the heavens declare the glory of God, and young children are often better equipped to notice that than we are.Use these years to nurture awe rather than rush past it. Point out the size of the ocean, the strange design of a beetle, the way stars look brighter far from the city. Tell them stories, both the true story of Scripture and the good, imaginative stories that echo it. A child who learns early to delight in the world God made has a head start on believing that world has a good Author. Trust Before Independence Before a young child can obey out of understanding, they obey out of trust. This is why the tone of a home matters as much as its rules. Ephesians 6:4 warns fathers against provoking their children to anger. That warning exists because it is entirely possible to enforce all the right rules in a way that teaches a child that home is not safe.Security comes first. A child who knows without question that mom and dad&#x27;s love does not depend on their performance that day is a child who can eventually receive correction without falling apart. Discipline that lands on a foundation of secure love shapes a conscience. Discipline that lands on fear mostly just shapes compliance, and usually only for a while.Small Habits That Shape a LifetimeYou do not need an elaborate plan for these years. You need small, repeated habits. A short prayer before bed. Grace before meals, said out loud, every time, even when it feels routine. A regular rhythm of being at church together, not treated as optional around a busy schedule, but treated the way you would treat brushing teeth, simply part of what your family does.None of these habits will feel spiritually significant most nights. That is fine. Children are formed less by dramatic moments and more by what is repeated so often it becomes part of how they see the world. A five year old who has said the same simple bedtime prayer for three years is not bored of it. He is being shaped by it in ways neither of you can fully see yet. The Discipline of Ordinary Repetition You will explain the same thing to your child more times than you can count. Share your toys. Say sorry. Use kind words. It can feel, some days, like nothing is sinking in. This is normal, not a sign of failure. Repetition is not a failure of parenting. It is how parenting actually works at this age.Stay patient with the pace of it. Proverbs was written knowing full well that foolishness is naturally bound up in the heart of a child, not as a discouragement but as an honest expectation. You are not failing because your four year old needs the same reminder for the fortieth time. You are doing exactly what this age requires. Teaching Big Truths in Small WordsDo not assume theology has to wait until your child is older to make sense. Young children can grasp far more than we usually give them credit for, as long as it comes in small, simple pieces. Who made you? God made me. Why did God make you? To know him and love him. That kind of question and answer format, drawn from the historic catechisms of the church, gives a young child real theological vocabulary long before they could explain it in their own words.You do not need to explain every doctrine in full. You need to plant true, simple sentences early and let them grow with your child over the years. A four year old who can say God made everything and God loves me is carrying something sturdy, even if they cannot yet say why it matters. That sentence will still be there, waiting to be understood more deeply, when the hard questions of adolescence eventually come.What You Are Actually BuildingIt can be tempting to measure these years by how well behaved your children appear in public or how quickly they hit developmental milestones. Resist that measurement. What you are actually building in these years is much less visible and much more important. You are shaping a child&#x27;s basic sense of whether the world is safe, whether they are loved apart from their performance, and whether God and his word are treated as central or optional in their home.None of that shows up on a report card. All of it will shape the adult your child eventually becomes far more than anything else you do in these years. You will not get these years back, and you will not do them perfectly. But you do not need to. You need only to keep showing up, keep pointing them toward wonder, keep holding them close, and trust that the same God who is forming you as a parent is, at the very same time, quietly forming your child through you. Parenting Young Children: The Years of Trust and Wonder

A lot of parenting advice today treats the teenage years as an inevitable season of pushback, arguing, and quiet or loud rebellion against parental authority, something to simply survive until it passes. That framing did not come from Scripture. It came from modern psychology and pop culture, and it has quietly convinced a lot of Christian parents to expect, even excuse, disrespect they would never tolerate at any other age. The Bible does not carve out a developmental exception where honoring your father and mother becomes optional for a few years. Ephesians 6:1-3 was written to households with children old enough to hear the letter read aloud, and the command still stands, obey your parents in the Lord, honor your father and mother.This does not mean adolescence brings no real change. Something does shift in these years. But what should shift is not whether a teenager honors their parents. What should shift is whether their faith is still borrowed from you or has genuinely become their own.The Difference Between Questions and Rebellion There is an important difference between a teenager asking hard questions and a teenager being disrespectful or defiant, and collapsing the two together does real damage. A teenager who says, I don&#x27;t understand why we believe this, can you help me see it, is doing exactly what Scripture calls all believers to do. First Peter 3:15 tells us to always be ready to give a reason for the hope within us, which assumes that hope can be examined honestly. That kind of question deserves patience, not suspicion.A teenager who rolls their eyes at correction, mocks a sibling&#x27;s faith, or simply refuses to submit to reasonable authority in the home is doing something different. Romans 1:30 lists disobedience to parents among the marks of a heart turned away from God, not a neutral stage of growing up. Second Timothy 3 lists it again among the signs of hard, difficult times, not as something expected and harmless. Scripture takes honor and obedience seriously at every age a child lives under a parent&#x27;s roof, and treating chronic disrespect as normal teaches a teenager that it is acceptable, right when they most need to hear that it is not.From Borrowed Faith to Owned FaithWhat does need to happen in these years is real, and it is not the same thing as rebellion. A young child believes largely because their parents believe. That is right and good for a five year old. It is not enough for a twenty five year old. Somewhere in between, a teenager needs to move from a faith they were handed to a faith they have examined and taken hold of themselves.That transition can and should happen without defiance. It happens through honest teaching, through watching parents whose faith is real rather than performed, through being given real reasons rather than only rules, and through a home where questions are welcomed rather than punished. A teenager can wrestle deeply with what they believe while still speaking to their parents with honor. The two are not in tension. A home that holds together high expectations for respect and genuine room for real questions gives a teenager the best possible environment to actually own their faith, rather than merely inherit it or, just as often, rebel against it for its own sake.Presence Over ControlNone of this means a parent&#x27;s job in these years is simply to hold the line and wait it out. Teenagers still need presence, not just rules. Unstructured time together, showing up for what they care about, listening more than lecturing, all of this earns the kind of trust that makes correction land as care rather than control. A teenager who feels truly known by their parents has far less reason to manufacture conflict just to prove their independence.Identity in a Noisy SeasonAdolescence has always involved figuring out identity, and it is a harder task now, with a phone offering an endless stream of competing answers about who a teenager is supposed to be. You cannot control every input, but you can remain the steadier, more patient voice by staying close and staying honest. Remind them often, in ordinary conversation rather than formal speeches, that their identity is not something to construct on their own. It was given to them, as someone made in God&#x27;s image, and if they are in Christ, as someone who already belongs to him.The Wider VillageTitus 2 pictures older believers investing directly in younger ones, and this becomes especially valuable in adolescence, as teenagers naturally start listening to voices beyond their parents. A youth leader, a coach, a mentor at church who reinforces the same truths you have been teaching often lands with a weight your own voice cannot carry alone. Recruit those voices intentionally rather than trying to carry this stage by yourself. Growing Freedom, Not Growing DistanceEach year of adolescence should bring more freedom paired with more responsibility, practiced in small, lower stakes decisions before your teenager leaves home for good. That growth in freedom is not the same thing as growing distance, and it is certainly not the same thing as growing disrespect. A teenager can be trusted with more independence while still being expected to honor their parents at every step of the way.This stage will test your patience, and it will test your teenager&#x27;s character. But do not go into it expecting rebellion as the price of growth. Expect, and pray for, and pursue with real effort, a teenager whose faith is maturing into something truly their own, held together with honor rather than won at the cost of it. Pastor Thiago Silva

Parenting Teenagers: From Borrowed Faith to Owned Faith

The letting go that begins in the teenage years reaches its full weight the day you drop your child off at a dorm, or watch them move into their first apartment, and drive away without them. The daily access is gone. This is a real and significant shift, but it is worth being precise about what actually changes. Genesis 2 describes a man leaving his father and mother to build a household of his own. That leaving was always part of God&#x27;s design, the natural next step after years of raising a child toward maturity, not a loss to mourn. What does not change is the command in Exodus 20:12 to honor your father and mother. That command carries no age limit. Your governance over your child&#x27;s daily decisions is meant to end. Your relationship, and their honor toward you, is not.From Governing to GuidingFor eighteen years you made rules and had the final say under your own roof. That kind of direct authority is largely finished now, and it should be, since a young adult starting a household or a career cannot stay under daily parental direction forever. What replaces it is guidance rather than governance, a voice a young adult still chooses to seek out and respect, rather than one they are required to obey. This shift is what raising a child well was always aiming at, someone capable of standing on their own, still honoring you, but no longer needing you to make their decisions for them. Owning a Faith That Was Always Meant to Be Theirs College often becomes the season where a young adult&#x27;s faith is examined more directly than ever before, by professors, by roommates, by ideas they have not encountered at home. This is not a crisis to fear. It is an opportunity for a faith that was taught in your home to become a conviction genuinely held, the same maturing process that should have already begun in adolescence continuing to its intended end. Do not mistake this for an excuse to expect drifting or unbelief as a normal cost of growing up. Scripture never treats a wandering heart as a neutral stage to pass through. Hebrews 3:12 warns believers to watch that none among them develop an evil, unbelieving heart that leads them away from the living God. That warning assumes real danger, not an inevitable and harmless phase. Keep teaching, keep praying, and keep expecting, not merely hoping, that the faith you built into your child&#x27;s life will hold. Find Them a Church, Not Just a Campus MinistryOne of the most practical things you can do before your child leaves for college is help them think about finding a local church, not only a campus ministry. Campus ministries are often wonderful, but they are usually built around a four year window and a peer group the same age. A local church offers something a campus ministry cannot, a full community across generations, the ordinary means of grace, and a place to belong that does not graduate when they do. Encourage your college student to visit a few churches early in their first semester rather than letting it slide. Ask about it when you talk, not as a checklist item, but as real interest in whether they have found a place to be fed and to belong. When They Wander Some college students do wander, further than their parents ever expected, and it is right to grieve that when it happens rather than treat it as an expected outcome you should have braced for. Scripture takes this seriously. It is not simply a season to outlast. At the same time, grief is not the same as despair, and conviction about the seriousness of wandering is not the same as giving up on your child. The father in Luke 15 does not chase his son down the road while the son is still leaving, but he also never stops watching for him, and the moment the son turns back, the father runs to meet him. That posture, taking sin seriously while never closing the door to repentance, is the biblical balance. Keep speaking the truth to your wandering child in love. Keep the relationship warm. Keep praying with real urgency, not resigned patience, trusting that God is fully able to bring back what looks lost. Staying Connected Without HoveringCommunication with a college student works best with a light, steady rhythm rather than a heavy one. A weekly call, a regular text, an occasional visit, these keep the relationship warm without crowding the independence they are learning to steward well. Resist treating a quiet stretch as a red flag. Silence from a college student is far more often a sign of a full schedule than a sign of a problem.When you do talk, ask more questions than you give advice, and listen for how they are actually doing spiritually, not just academically or socially. Advice given after real listening lands differently than advice offered first. You are still their parent, still owed honor, still a voice they should want to seek out. Staying someone they want to call matters more, over the long run, than staying someone who manages every detail from a distance. Your Job Now Is Mostly PrayerThe covenant promise made over your child at their baptism did not expire when they turned eighteen. God&#x27;s claim on them, and his faithfulness to them, was never dependent on your ongoing management, even when it felt that way.Pray for your college student more than you manage them. Stay present without hovering. Trust the years you already invested, and trust the God who was at work in those years even when you could not see it. Letting go of daily control is not the same as lowering your expectations for their faith. It is handing your child back to the God who was always the one holding them in the first place, and asking him to finish what he started.Pastor Thiago Silva

The Bible is the inspired word of God. It is without error in its original manuscripts, and contains everything we need to know about having a right relationship with God and our fellow human beings. The Bible is the basis for all of our essential beliefs (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

God is one (Mark 12:29), yet mysteriously exists in three Persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), who are to be equally loved, honored, and surrendered to (Matthew 28:19).

Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human. He is the sole Mediator able to restore the broken relationship, and the resulting alienation, between God and people (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity. He is alive and active. He indwells followers of Christ, working in unison with the Word of God to guide them in all truth. He is the power that enables Christians to live as new creations in Christ and empowers believers for service (John 16:7-14; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 6:17).

People are created by God and in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). On this basis, all people must be treated with dignity, honor, love and respect (James 3:9-10). At the same time, in their quest for independence and the centrality of self, all people begin their lives alienated from God, and in this condition are without hope and under judgment, a condition that can only be cured through God’s loving, gracious, and saving intervention (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1). As the image of God, we are most alive when our trust, affections and allegiances center on Him.

Restoration between God and people (also called ‘salvation’) happens when the Holy Spirit gives people a new heart, leading and enabling them to trust in Jesus alone for salvation (John 1:12-13). Because God loves His creation, He will also restore the entire universe to a condition of beauty, rest, joy, perfection, and freedom (Romans 8:18-30). God’s world, which began as a promising Garden (Genesis 1:27-31), will find its fulfillment in a perfected, life-giving City in which there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain (Revelation 21:1-8).

Good works do not and cannot make us acceptable to God (Ephesians 2:8-9), but are the natural outcome of authentic faith in Jesus (James 2:17). We become more fully human—the very best and most healthy version of ourselves—to the degree that we follow God’s loving commands. His commands, properly understood, are neither limiting nor oppressive but life-giving. Obedience to God’s commands is an essential prerequisite for true human flourishing.

The Church is the family of God and consists of those who place their functional trust (faith) in Jesus. God wants all members of His worldwide Church, together with their children, to be active in a local church which meets regularly to worship God, serve each other, and be a life-giving presence in their local community and world (Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:24-25).

We believe that God has created men (male) and women (female) equal in their essential dignity and human personhood, but different and complementary in their functions; He also created marriage to be exclusively the covenant union of one man (male) and one woman (female), and designed intimate sexual activity to occur exclusively within that covenant union.

Women’s Ministry

The Bible gives us several pictures of what the church is, but none of them matters more than this one. The church is the body of Christ. As his body, we are a living organism, made up of interconnected members who genuinely need one another. Our union with Christ brings us not only into fellowship with him, but into fellowship with each other. As Paul puts it, we are individually members one of another (Romans 12:5).That word, members, is worth sitting with, because it is not a legal term. It is a body word. It is the same word you would use for a hand or an eye. Interestingly, the New Testament actually contains more commands about how we are to relate to one another than it does about our duties to the watching world, or even, at times, about our duties directly to God. That is not an accident. It shows us that our relationship with God is most clearly reflected in how we love the believers standing next to us (1 John 3:23, 4:7, 20).More Than a FormalityFor many people, church membership feels like paperwork. A name on a roll, a class you complete, a form you sign. Biblically, it is something else entirely. Membership is about sharing life together.The New Testament has another word for the church, koinonia, usually translated fellowship or communion. This is not a side benefit of church life. It is essential to the church&#x27;s identity and mission. The church cannot exist or grow without it. The natural outworking of Christ&#x27;s life in us leads us to gather with other believers, the way the earliest church did, breaking bread together and sharing meals with glad and generous hearts (Acts 2:44, 46). It also leads us to resist the pull toward isolation, the temptation Hebrews warns us about when it tells us not to neglect meeting together (Hebrews 10:25).A believer who never experiences deep fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ is missing something. Not an optional extra, but the full expression of what it means to be part of Christ&#x27;s body.Whether we gather in smaller settings, the way Paul describes a church meeting in someone&#x27;s home in Romans 16, or together for corporate worship, it is when we are together that the body of Christ actually functions the way it was designed to. Paul describes it this way in Ephesians. Speaking the truth in love, we grow up into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, builds itself up in love as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:15-16). Notice that image. A body, not an audience.The Purpose of Church MembershipChurch membership exists to help Christians grow in their faith by encouraging and supporting one another, and in doing that, to display the love and unity that should mark God&#x27;s people in a way the world can actually see.Paul reminds the Corinthian church that every member of the body is essential (1 Corinthians 12). God has given every believer gifts and abilities through the Holy Spirit, and those gifts are meant to meet the needs of his people inside the context of real fellowship. We grow, and we serve, best inside a community where we are actually connected to one another, not from a distance.Two things define what membership is for.Mutual care. This is simply a lifestyle that takes seriously the New Testament&#x27;s commands for how Christians are to love and care for one another. Lived out consistently, it creates a healthy and vibrant church, the kind that naturally impacts the world around it and brings glory back to God, from whom and through whom and to whom are all things (Romans 11:36).The exercise of spiritual gifts. God gives spiritual gifts to believers so that they can build one another up (1 Peter 4:10). As those gifts are actually practiced, not just discussed, the church grows in love and unity. It becomes a place where every member is involved, where gifts are noticed, developed, and used to serve the body rather than left dormant (Ephesians 4:15-16).The church was never meant to be a place for isolated disciples, believers who love Jesus but keep his people at arm&#x27;s length. Jesus himself gave us a new commandment, that we love one another the way he has loved us, and said the world would know we are his disciples by that love (John 13:34-35). Church membership is simply the practical shape that command takes. It is how mutual love and care stop being an idea and start being a life.Living in community is not optional for a Christian, and it is not something we can do well on our own. We need the support, the encouragement, and yes, the accountability that comes from actually sharing life inside the body of Christ.Connect With Our Mission and VisionThis is exactly why membership matters at Bethel. We exist to make mature disciples of Jesus Christ, people who love God, love one another, and bear faithful witness to Christ here in Lake Charles and beyond. That mission cannot be carried out by individuals attending services in parallel. It requires a body, joined together, each part doing its work.We want to be known as a family church, a place of real belonging rather than surface level friendliness, and membership is where that belonging becomes formal and mutual. We also want to be a training church, a congregation where every believer&#x27;s gifts are recognized and put to use rather than left on the sidelines, and membership is where you are formally welcomed into that shared work. Becoming a member of Bethel is not a formality you complete once and move past. Every Sunday morning, before the doors open for worship, the sanctuary is already full of something else. A room of adults working through a text of Scripture together, the same way they did last week and the week before. Down the hall, children are hearing the story of the Bible told for the first time. In the Fellowship Hall, teenagers are wrestling honestly with what they actually believe.That is Sunday School at Bethel. Not a warm up act before the real service starts, in a room off to the side. Part of the real thing, in the same room where we will soon gather to worship.Why We Do ThisBethel exists to make mature disciples of Jesus Christ, people who love God, love one another, and bear faithful witness to Christ here in Lake Charles and beyond. That mission does not pause for an hour on Sunday morning and pick back up at 10:30. Sunday School is one of the plainest, most ordinary ways we live it out, for every age, every week of the school year.We take our cue from Scripture rather than convenience. In Deuteronomy 6, God tells his people to teach his commands to their children constantly, in the ordinary rhythms of the day, when they sit at home and when they walk along the road. That responsibility belongs first to parents. Paul says the same thing in Ephesians, telling fathers to bring their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.So we want to be honest about what Sunday School is and is not. It is not a substitute for what happens at your kitchen table or in your living room. It exists to support that, to put good teaching, good questions, and good company around what you are already doing at home. A church that trains its people well does not try to replace parents. It equips them, and it gives their children a wider circle of faithful adults who are aiming at the same thing they are.We want Bethel to be known as a discipleship church and a training church, a place where sound teaching is not reserved for Sunday morning worship alone. Sunday School is where that training actually happens, week in and week out, for people at every stage of life. It is also where we live out being a family church, because a class is not just information delivered on a schedule. It is a room full of people who are learning to know each other, pray for each other, and walk together over years, not just a single semester.What We OfferOur classes are organized by age, because an eight year old, a sixteen year old, and a forty year old need to be taught differently, even when the content underneath is the same gospel.Children&#x27;s Sunday School (up to age 11) Meets in the children&#x27;s classroomOur youngest students are building the foundation everything else will rest on. We teach the Bible as one true story, not a collection of moral tales, a story that runs from creation to the cross to the new creation still ahead of us. Our teachers use age appropriate methods, songs, and memory work to help children love God&#x27;s Word early, so that by the time they are asking harder questions as teenagers, they already know the story well enough to wrestle with it honestly.Youth Sunday School (ages 12 to 18) Meets in the Fellowship HallAdolescence is when faith either becomes a student&#x27;s own or stays borrowed from their parents. Our youth classes are built for that transition. We do not shy away from hard questions. We want our students to ask them here, among people who love them, rather than somewhere else, alone. Class time is discussion heavy on purpose, covering theology, apologetics, and how to think like a Christian about a world that will pull them in a dozen directions. Our goal is not students who can recite the right answers. It is young men and women who own their faith because they have tested it and found it true.Adult Sunday School (18 and up) Meets in the sanctuaryDiscipleship does not stop at eighteen, and neither do we. Our adult classes go deep into Scripture and theology, working carefully through books of the Bible and questions of doctrine and life together, giving members a place to keep growing long after they have left the youth room behind. Whether you have followed Christ for forty years or four months, whether you grew up in church or walked in for the first time last month, there is a class here built to stretch you, not just inform you.Across all three tracks, our teachers are not simply filling a volunteer slot. They are men and women who love the church and know the material, and part of our vision as a training church is to keep raising up more of them from within our own congregation.When We MeetSunday School meets every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:15, right before worship, during the academic year, from August through May. We take a break over the summer, both to give our families some breathing room and to give our teachers time to rest and prepare for the year ahead.Everyone Belongs HereWhatever season you are in, whatever your children&#x27;s ages, whatever your family looks like, there is a place for you at Bethel on Sunday morning. You do not need a church background to walk in. You do not need to have your questions figured out first. You just need to show up.We believe that ten years from now, the fruit of these Sunday mornings will not be measured by how many names were on a roll. It will be measured in marriages that grew stronger, children who came to own their faith instead of merely inheriting it, and members who once sat quietly in the back who are now the ones teaching, leading, and shepherding others.That is what we are building, one Sunday at a time. Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said that about children, not about a program built for them off to the side. That is the heart behind everything we do with children at Bethel.A pastor once described a small church where children were not handed a separate service full of performances, but something plainer. They worshiped. They prayed. They read Scripture. They were loved by adults who were not their parents. They scrubbed walls on a workday, handed out bulletins, and wrote notes to the grieving. What looked at first like a church with too few resources for anything flashy turned out to be a gift. The children were never spectators. They were part of the body.That is what we are after. We are not trying to build a parallel church for children. We are trying to bring them further into the one we already have.Our PhilosophyThe purpose of Bethel Kids is to help covenant children know Christ, love his church, participate in worship, grow in biblical truth, and serve God&#x27;s people. We are not aiming to entertain children apart from the church. We are aiming to raise them as members of Christ&#x27;s covenant community, present tense, not someday when they are older and ready.What This Looks LikeWorship, every Sunday. The center of children&#x27;s ministry at Bethel is corporate worship, not a separate room down the hall. Children sit with their families in the service, learn the liturgy simply by hearing it week after week, and sing with the congregation long before they can read the words themselves. As they grow, they take on more, reading Scripture, leading the call to worship, greeting and ushering as they are ready.Christian formation, August through May. Sunday school is the main teaching ministry for children at Bethel, running alongside the school year and resting over the summer, when Vacation Bible School carries the teaching instead. The goal is simple. We want children to know the storyline of Scripture from creation to new creation, learn the Children&#x27;s Catechism or the Westminster Shorter Catechism as they grow, memorize key passages, understand the sacraments and prayer and worship, and build real friendships with other children along the way.Service, a few times a year. Children learn to serve by serving. A few times each year we fold them into something tangible. Writing encouragement cards to members who are sick, grieving, or homebound. Helping prepare for VBS. Packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Rehearsing and singing with the Children&#x27;s Choir at Easter and Christmas. The goal is for children to see themselves as contributors to this church, not merely as an audience for it.Celebration, through the seasons. A handful of anchor events mark the year. Special activities at Easter. Three days of VBS in June. Reformation Day in October, a whole family event. A Christmas party in December, paired with packing those Operation Christmas Child boxes.How Children Fit Into Bethel&#x27;s VisionBethel wants to be known as a discipleship church, a training church, a family church, and a rooted church, and children&#x27;s ministry is not exempt from any of those marks. Our children learn the same gospel the whole congregation is being formed by. They practice the same things we ask of every member, prayer, reading Scripture aloud, and serving. They build relationships across every generation at Bethel, not just with their peers. And they grow up inside the ordinary rhythms of this particular church, rather than a curriculum imported from somewhere else.Ages and StructureNursery care is available for children from birth through age three during both worship and Sunday school. Bethel Kids gathers children from age four through sixth grade for one combined Sunday school hour (9:30 AM).An InvitationIf you are visiting Bethel with children, you do not need to find a separate building or a different service. Bring them with you. Let them sit in worship, sing what they do not yet understand, and be loved by people who are not their parents. That is not a lesser experience while they wait to grow up. It is exactly where we want them to be.We are asking God to raise these children inside his church, not beside it. To give them worship instead of performance, truth instead of entertainment, and a place to belong long before they are old enough to choose it for themselves.We would love to have your family join us.

Children’s Ministry

Somewhere between twelve and eighteen, faith stops being something you inherited from your parents and starts becoming something you actually own, or it doesn&#x27;t. That stretch of years is not a waiting room before real discipleship begins. It is one of the most important seasons a person will ever walk through.Our Youth Ministry is designed to help students explore their faith, connect with friends, and build a strong spiritual foundation during those formative years. Our goal is to create a space where students feel valued, supported, and challenged to live out their faith in their homes, schools, and communities.Why We Take This Season SeriouslyAdolescence asks hard questions, whether a student ever says them out loud or not. Does any of this actually hold up. Is my faith mine, or just something I grew up around. What does it look like to follow Christ at school, online, with friends who don&#x27;t believe any of it.We would rather students ask those questions here, in a room full of people who love them, than somewhere else, alone. Our youth ministry is not built to hand students easy answers and move on. It is built to walk with them while they test what they believe against Scripture, against real life, and against a world that will pull them in a dozen directions at once, and come out the other side with a faith that is genuinely theirs.That does not mean we treat doubt as the goal or leave students to figure everything out on their own. We want them wrestling honestly, but wrestling toward something, a settled confidence in Christ and in his Word that can carry them well past high school.What This Looks LikeMonthly Fellowship NightsOnce a month, our students gather for an evening of food, games, fellowship, and good discussion. It is a simple format on purpose. Kids need a place where they can just be kids, laugh, eat too much pizza, and let their guard down before anyone asks them a serious question.But underneath the games, these nights are built for something more. As a training church, we give students real responsibility, asking them to pray, read Scripture, and serve. As a family church, our students are not sorted off into a youth only world. They are known by adults across this congregation who are not their parents, and they belong to the whole body, not just their age group. And as a rooted church, we want their faith planted deeply enough in Scripture and in this particular church that it can hold steady wherever life takes them after high school.A Word to ParentsYou are still the primary disciple maker in your teenager&#x27;s life, even during the years when it feels like they are pulling away from everything you have taught them. Our youth ministry does not exist to replace that. It exists to back you up, to put other faithful adults and other Christian students around your son or daughter, and to give them a place to keep processing what they are learning at home.If your student is walking through a hard season, or you simply want to know more about what we are doing and how you can be part of it, we would genuinely love to hear from you.A Word to StudentsYou do not need to have your faith figured out to walk through our doors. Bring your real questions. Bring your doubts, and your friends. We are not looking for students who already have it all together. We are looking for students willing to keep showing up while God does the slow work of making their faith their own.We would love to have you with us.
